I have a friend who needed some help with his laptop. He got a few really nasty viruses and did a factory reset. Its a HP laptop that was preloaded with Windows 8.1. He did the reset without pulling the key from the BIOS and it didn't activate Windows after install. There is a Recovery partition that is about 20gbs, I'm assuming its the HP recovery. Problem is the recovery console says there isn't a recovery image. Any help?

Solution
I talked to HP and tried to get them to give me my Windows 8 key but all they wanted to do was have me send it in for warranty. I found a program called RWEverything that actually pulled my Windows 8 key from the BIOS. I figured I would post it here in case anyone else has this issue.

Download/Install RWEverything (freeware)
http://rweverything.com/download/

Click ACPI, click MSDM tab, scroll down and key should be beside "Data"

I entered product key and Windows activated successfully. The plus of all this being now I have a fresh install without the HP pre-packaged garbage.
