Hi, I'm trying to power an external HDD connected via a USB Y cable. On one of my laptops I can power it only from the USB port on the computer, and I spin down the disk after unmounting it using the "udisks --detach" command (linux), this stops the HDD from spinning so I can safely remove it. However, on my other computer (A raspberry pi) I can't power it all from the USB port so I have to use the Y cable and connect one end to a USB wall power supply. The problem with this is that it cannot be safely spun down because the power is still plugged in via the wall socket. I know this is happening because I hear a whining sound after I unplug it from the wall. Is there anything I can do about this because I'm worried I could damage the hard drive doing this repeatedly? Thanks.
