my old motherboard is a gigabyte as well, and i saw this video on how i can replace it without reinstalling windows and loosing my info

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZn_hSlT0zk

i was just wondering if uninstalling all my drivers work like the video says?

also please let me know any other info you think i need to know, ive never done anything more then taking apart hardware and putting it back togeather, so im not too experienced with compatibility and the software side of things

also will there be an increase in how much power i need?typically i would only need a new power supply unit if i installed a video card right?

Solution
Theoretically yes that should work if you uninstall all the drivers, if it doesn't you will have to install windows again and your old OS will become windows.old with all ur files in on your drive. Your power supply should be fine but i would go to an alternative motherboard. Generally people go for Asus first because of great build quality, then msi second because of features but has poor quality check, and gigabyte well nowhere near as good as msi and asus if you ask me.

So i personally would reccomend:$130 (cheaper) http://www.amazon.com/M5A99FX-PRO-R2-0-990FX-Motherboard/dp/B008B6ONXK/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432898453&sr=1-2 would save you some money and they very popular reliable boards for every gamers needs.

Or for something more extreme to last you longer ... $167 http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-SABERTOOTH-990FX-R2-0-Motherboard/dp/B008YDJHWM/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1432898453&sr=1-7 this is a great board for its price :)

I would reccomend upgrading you CPU to a AM3+ processor. The ram will fit in it and you should not require anymore power unless you upgrading/installing gpu.

Solution
You can re-use a hard drive. Just make sure you completely re-install Windows on the new motherboard, and that doing that will require you to also re-install all of your programs since their entries will vanish from the new registry Windows will create during the Windows installation.

Different model motherboards, and sometimes diffferent revisions of the same model of a motherboard will have different chips and will then likely want to use different drivers as well. You need to re-install Windows to make sure the drivers for the chips on your new motherboard are installed. You should not lose your data from your other software, but you will need to re-install the other programs to get their entries back into the registry. Of course, you should backup all of your data before doing any of this.

Also, a Windows installation is locked to your motherboard. After the install, it may well want you to call Microsoft to explain why you are attempting to use the old copy of Windows on a new motherboard since Windows will assume you are attempting to use it on another computer, and Microsoft wants you to buy a another copy of widows or a new registration key to do that.

thanks man you helped me out alot, i got this instead
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131874
its got 2 pcie 1x slots and plenty of clearance, unlike that damn gigabyte lol, i appreciate it, you helped me out alot by getting me to rethink that board

i just hope i can install it with no issues, ive never messed with a bios before and i gota turn my 3 pin pump up to 100% cas the board only has 4 pins but i think i can do at least that, i hope it dont get more complex then that tho lol, i might be back on this site soon, hope not

exactly gigabyte is the 'trash' motherboard when i see it haha :p best of luck with it! the 2 pcie slots will let you sli in future as that board will let you have use am3+ processors which is the fx 8350 etc and can be as good or better than i5's if overclocked nicely :)
and the 3pin pump yer ... the 4th pin allows for PWM remember that so 3pin will be fine but if you want to control it, use the voltage to control it, i use a pc fan controller to fit in a bay and it's very simple to control and install.

thats if you consider getting one :) looks neat too!
