I built a computer for a friend and his DVD writer quit working. He replaced it and now this second one quit working again. It seems like it would have to be a power supply related problem, but he is not having any issues whit anything else. On the drives the tray still ejects but it won't read any discs. On the first one that broke, it caused some instabilities in windows but once he unplugged it those problems went away. He ran without a drive for about 6 months before he replaced it. Now this new one broke after a couple of months. Do you just think he is having bad luck and the third one is the charm, or do you think it is a power supply issue also? I'm going to be testing next week and i'd like to figure out the problem if there really is one. Any other ideas? thanks

if possible try i different sata power lead or sata cable, if those dont work different sata port? sometimes the solution can be really simple, sometimes not

edit : assuming it's sata

I am going to test the voltage on the power supply with a multi-meter, but that is a good idea to just switch up the sata and i'll use a different power plug as well in case it may be an intermittent problem stressing the unit out and burning something up. Hopefully there will be an open plug on a different line.

No it was a good one i think a corsair, but for some reason it keeps taking out the dvd writers, the still open and close, but they don't read, and the first one the broke caused problems at boot time until he unplugged it.
