Solution
It would probably be a flook. I have never had issues with Gigabyte ;)
Ill bet both of them are about the same reliability but Id pick the Gigabyte.
If you did not have a surge protector that is probably the reason not the brand.

I had 2 Gigabyte motherboards die on me most likely due to power surges(I bought a surge protector). Would you say that surges would have damaged any brand of motherboards so I shouldn't distrust Gygabite as a brand?

I would at first opt for the Gigabyte, since the MSI has been reported to have throttling issues when using 8-cores or overclocking. Also the Gigabyte has onboard USB 3 headers, if your case supports it it is a nice feature I guess.
If you are interested the ECS A970M-A is a bit cheaper motherboard but has a better VRM/phase count and is a bit better quality made.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into it though it's the first time I've ever heard of the brand.

It's not available in webshops in my country, I couldn't find it on eBay either. If I order from Amazon the price including shipping and customs would be too expensive. Any ideas where else to check?
