This HD is from my laptop that had had its motherboard burn out. I took the HD and plugged it into my new laptop to extract the files. After 1 week I've sudden received this message: You need to format the disk drive f: before you can use it.

A new window pops up every 10 seconds and the drive no longer accessible. I already looked at this post, but I when I type in chkdsk the drive is not recognized. I can access it through the device manager though.

Any thoughts on how to extract the data of this drive?

Thanks.

Sounds like you have some bad sectors. Could also be from corrupted data or files. I've seen this before and it's usually one or both of those. There's a program out there you can use, i forget what it's called, but it is a data recovery program allows you to analyze the disk to see if it's data corruption or a problem with the disk itself. It's called Testdisk. it runs from the command line so if you aren't comfortable ding that then try another utility like Asoftech Data Recovery. If you have a Seagate drive, go get their Seatools app from their support website. You download it as a .iso and burn it to a CD to make a bootable disk (it runs independently of Windows). You need to install the drive in a PC for it to work best as a USB...

If that's inconclusive or it doesn't work, then the data may be irrecoverable. If it's really important to you (like priceless) then you can pay someone to extract it for you, but be prepared to sell your firstborn child o one of your kidneys as it's really expensive.
