I have a 2012 500gb hard drive, and I am currently experiencing a slow pc. I was wondering if a modern day hard drive that is 1tb in addition to the 500 gb speed up the computer or would I need to replace the 500gb completely with this 1tb hard drive to experience a truly better experience.

Solution
unless you add a higher RPM hard drive and reinstall your OS, you won't see much improvement on that, but if you are very close to filling the 500GB drive, then adding another and moving some stuff over will help a bit, if you are going to reinstall the OS though, get an SSD, just 240GB will do and install the OS on that, that will dramatically increase the speeds of anything installed on that drive.

Solution
Try running CHKDSK /R
then
Manually run a defrag

Then tell me if you hard drive is slow...
(Those 2 steps will fix most non-fatal hard drive speed issues.)

I do recommend an SSD to anyone that doesn't already have one. The speed difference for me was fairly amazing.
