(sorry for english) i got my new zotac gtx 970 yesterday it idle temperature is 41-43 but in load it sometime goes 84 degrees(mostly stays at 80) is that normal or my gpu is defective . i live in india's hotttest place where in summer temp stays around 45°-50° and my room temperatures is around 35°. so should keep it return it.
i also set my my fan speed to 70% using msi afterburner but its stays at 80 yet not tryied for oc

Mini ITX case will do it. I also suspect that you have a reference model card?

Really, there's absolutely nothing wrong with your card temperatures. I guess there's a lot of people out there who never owned a reference GTX 480 or 580, which both regularly ran at 89c-92c. My reference GTX 780 Ti in a Corsair case with 6 case fans still runs at 82c, exactly matching the Temp Limit setting. That's how Turbo Boost works.

Temperatures seems adequate to your room temperature. Unfortunatelly because where you are you should not overclock this card unless you go h2o.
Any overclock you try on it will turn it's back on you and throttling will decrease overall performance instead of any gain.

no i don't have axhaust fan, it's cheap intex neptune i am buying in next month cooler master k381 .

That's a high, but normal temperature..... assuming your fans are running at a reasonable rate, like 60%-70% in Auto mode. If you are running a reference model card, then that's a very normal temperature for a hot climate running intense games.

Turbo Boost operates by setting a target temperature, called the Temp Limit in Afterburner. Your card will adjust its fans, Turbo Boost clocks, and voltages to seek out and maintain exactly that temperature (or a few degrees above). The target temperature on your card is probably right around 80c-82c (you can check it in Afterburner). So your temp is completely normal, given that it's operating very near the factory preset target temperature.

So in order to really gauge your card's operation, you need to also mention if the fans are running abnormally high to maintain that temperature (in Auto mode). You can also adjust your Temp Limit as part of a tweaking protocol to enable higher overclocks, provided you are also manually turning up your fan speeds. So temperature, in and of itself, doesn't really say much about whether your card is defective, you can even adjust your temperature target if you want cooler or warmer temps. But the fan speeds also need to be taken into consideration.

I recommend you return your fans to Auto and report how fast they run while gaming and what temperature you hit.

I just checked out that video. The word "thermostat" is exactly the best way to describe the Temp Limit. You set your thermostat, and the card will either speed up and get warmer, or it will slow down and get cooler, all so that it will hit and maintain that target temperature. With Nvidia cards, you never have to worry about your GPU going below its rated standard core clock speeds. The drawback to hitting your GPU Temp Limit is that your Turbo Boost clock speeds will be dialed down.

yes in msi ab target temp is 80 degree to maintain this temp fans running arround 65-70% sometimes goes 75%.
i also changed temp limit in fb to 73 degrees but temp stays 80 degree fan usage is 80% maybe it is for my mini itx case or i have no exhaust fan or my room temp is not going down to 35 degrees

thanku for your help now i don't worry about gpu temp you really solved my doubt and on thing more i played fc4 on ultra setting and it runs avg around 50 fps low 36 high 72 is that ok because i see som benchmark that on techspot, toms that shows 65fps avg and mine is around 50fps. if i play on that temp constantly will my gpu get damage (i now my english is horrible)
