Used to have a TW cable modem which I connected to my Netgear Router. Just one connection available-an ethernet cable from TW modem to Netgear port called "Internet". Ok fine and dandy.
It works

So... TW gives me a new modem NOW with built in router and wireless.

I disabled the wireless in TW modem and just plugged port 1 of the TW modem into the Netgear Router port that says "Internet". I did not set Netgear up as an AP. I do not use the Time Warner ethernet ports. All seems to work fine via ethernet and wireless on the Netgear...
1. Any issues with this and not setting it up as an AP?

2. For grins I then turned on the Wireless of the TW modem with a different SSID (from Netgear) and everything still worked well and I had additional wireless connections FWIW to connect to...
Thoughts..

Sorry if this is stupid
Thanks
Peter

You're fine... I'm with Time Warner myself.. and I think they do charge extra for the cable modem with Wife as opposed to a regular cable modem... you might want to check your bill (ignore what any tech tells you).

A couple of years ago, I went to Best Buy and bought my own Motorola Cable Modem and called Time Warner to activate it.. It's already paid for itself in the money I saved by no longer paying the monthly rental fees. That is something you might want to consider.

Thank you DigitalDoc,
I sort of thought I had it right related to question 1 but was not sure if there would be a conflict of some sort. Was thinking they both might be doling out IP addresses even if wireless was turned off on one.

**BUT..... on question 2...:
I now have wireless turned on on both routers. And it does work. Now I do not have any ethernet plugged into the TW modem. And I am able to connect to both routers (different SSID's). I was playing around. We have about 6 devices connected wirelessly-2 are streaming to TV (ROKU/Firestick), 3 are cell phones, one is laptop. Not all being used at same time.

THE ONLY thing I did notice is that on the one router (Netgear) the wireless speeds via speedtest.net are all over the map and not consistent as they normally are (TW wireless router speed is fine). Prob some interference between the two wireless router signals since Netgear not in AP mode perhaps??? I did try adjusting the Netgear channels, Turbo 40mhz, Full 20mhz, signal as Mixed,G only, and so on... and RTS/CTS (on/off) etc.. on Netgear
What should the settings be BTW for need max distance and bandwidth...
Eventually I need to add an AP and extender in house.. Not a big place, just a lot of walls.
Thanks for advice on these few extra bonus round questions related to original post question 2.

Appreciate your expertise.

Thanks again!!
Peter

Thank you SBM. I am thinking of doing this in the future to save the $8.
