I have a strange situation.

My external HDD is connected to my laptop to look at a serie or movie before going to sleep.

Last time, it didn't show up anymore.

Seems it doesn't want to initialize I think.

Should I take out the HDD of the case and try to see what it does with an adaptor ?

Any advise and / or comments are welcome !

Best Regards,

Tom

Hi there GranadaDude,

Is the drive powering up?
My advise would be to start with something simple as just connecting the drive with different cables to different port. You can try the drive on another system as well.
Is the drive recognized by Disk Management and how?
In case the drive is not recognized by Disk Management even after changing the cables(and it is not recognized on another system as well), there is something wrong with either the enclosure or the HDD itself. Keep in mind that taking the drive out of the enclosure may not work. Also, this will most probably void the warranty if under any.

In case the drive is recognized by Disk Management but has no partitions and/or file system, you need to use some kind of partition/data recovery software in order to get your data back. After that, it may be a good idea to test the drive with some HDD testing tool that will provide a S.M.A.R.T. report.
