DVI-D to VGA problems on Linux

I wanted a dual monitor setup, but I only have one VGA port, a DVI-D port, and a bunch of VGA monitors, so I got a DVI-D to VGA active converter for my DVI-D port (listed here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400402 ).

This converter, while it doesn't support the resolutions it says it does, can support an acceptable 1024x768 on Windows. However, using it on Linux presents multiple problems.

  • ■I cannot boot into Linux while both it and a VGA monitor are plugged in, because the VGA monitor will not display anything, likely because it is trying to use the DVI-D port.
■I cannot boot into Linux while only the DVI-D port is in use, because it, again, will not display anything. However, in both cases, the light turns intermittently as if it is going to turn on, but quickly goes back to as if it wasn't receiving a signal.
■If I boot using my VGA monitor and then plug in the DVI-D one, it is not detected in Xrandr/Arandr.

I'm not quite sure how to make it so Linux recognizes the converter, and I'd greatly appreciate some assistance.

It would also be interesting to know why it doesn't support higher resolutions, as the monitor does, but I do not expect that problem to be solved; I chalk it up to faulty technology.
