How to speed up my computer?

I have a geforce gtx 640 (zodiac) and a intel core 17 3770k cpu and 16 gb of ddr3 corsair vengence ram its running very slow and i would like to be able to play skyrim on ultra with very good graphics mods i have arround $400 to upgrade any ideas? leave a comment if you have an idea for me please

I'm guessing you meant GT 640, not GTX 640. If by slow you mean not able to run the games you want at your desired FPS or graphic settings, you would need a new graphics card. What resolution are you playing at?

a gpu is all you need for a perfomance bump. you can pick up a gtz 970 and a new psu if needed for around 400, probably a bit less.

To see what power supply you have, just open the case and read the sticker/name on it. In worst case, you will have to screw it out for a bit so you can read it.

And yes, gpu is what you need to update. GT 640, while still fairly good, can't really run anything new.

If you don't need to get new power supply, then you should be able to find GTX 970 for that much.
If you have to buy a new power supply, then GTX 960 4Gb.

Most likely that would put you around R9 290 range (assuming a new PSU). We need to know your PSU to make sure your system will have adequate power for the upgrade.

its just a 450 whatt corsair

Your PSU wouldn't be enough for a R9 290. The R9 290 needs 31A on the 12V rail and a 550W PSU at minimum. Here's the combo I would go with:

If your budget is before rebates (that's were the prices are low as posted above) you may want to consider just a graphics card upgrade to a GTX 960.
