My first build, will these parts fit together?

Hey all,

So I'm building my first desktop and I would like some hints, tips and suggestions. I'm breaking away from laptops and have been reading and watching videos of the basics of how PCs are assembled, and scared out of my mind about static electricity.

The PC will be mainly used for video editing first, and gaming second (I know there are lots of threads out there of people wanting to build that combination, apologies for being a broken record).

But question is, the parts that I picked (listed below) will they fit together correctly, or are there any suggested/better parts.

Oh, and Should I stack a SSD? Can I even do that? And if so what should I get?

My budget is $1500 - $2000, but it is a ongoing project, so I won't get everything at once and the budget might change in the future.

PARTS:

CPU - Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (4x 8GB)
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card (2-Way SLI)
Motherboard - MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
HDD - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
Case - NZXT Phantom 820 or ATX Mid Tower Case
PSU - Rosewill Hive 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

I'm still learning about this, though thanks a bunch.

Use pcpartpicker.com it lets you see current prices, and is great for checking compatibility. You may want to get a better rated PSU, since the 4790k uses quite a bit of power. Also, as for the RAM get 2x16 and not 4x8, and make sure you let us know the actual model number of the RAM that you are getting, so that we can tell you how optimal it will be for your build. You should definitely get an SSD, I'd recommend something like the Crucial MX100, it's great for it's price and has served me very well. You also didn't post a CPU cooler, so if you're planning on overclocking keep that in mind.

As you have an sli setup and and overclocking cpu and motherboard you need a better quality PSU. The one you have picked is tier 3 so really not ideal for your purpose http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html

I would aim for a good quality 850w. Yes 750 will work but why overstress the most vital part of your system. Also if stressing a PSU it can limit you OC potential.

What CPU cooler are you going to use?

An SSD in my mind is a must and if possible go for a 500gb. This will allow you to put your latest video project on the SSD while you work on it and you can move it to the HDD when finished. You might be ok with a 250gb but that depends how big and how many video you will be working on at any one time

also right now your in the middle of a gpu and cpu swap over from amd and intel. amd r300 cards in a few weeks will know how much faster they are over there older r line. intel skylake that uses the neer ddr-4 ram is dropping at the end of summer. in june mb vendor are going to start showing off thee newer mb.

If you can, definitely take his advice and wait a few months. Prices are expected to drop drastically and brand new product lines should come out.

I should of set this thread as a discussion.

@ShakedG question is opting for 2x16 because it'll run better that set up? Or is it because of the Motherboard?

And I'm not sure on the model, but what would you suggest, I like Cosair because I've been happy with their peripherals in the past, so I'd thought to stick to them when buying hardware.

As for the PSU I'll get a 1000W just to be safe.

But, I've been looking at a supposed easy to install 'plug and play' water cooling system that's nothing flash, which is the; Swiftech's H220-X liquid cooling system. This should fit the selected intel, but I'm not sure it'll fit in the tower itself, but if not then I was just going to stick to a fan, the; Cool Masters Hyper 212 EVO, since I've heard good things about it.

I'll get that Crucial MX 100 since I don't mind the price, and as mention by @sizzling, the SSD is in use when editing videos and projects, which I didn't know.

And @smorizio are you suggesting I should wait till june (next month) to get a AMD/intel because they are going to show a newline up? If so then I might just wait.

Definitely wait till june with the GPU, all the pricing is going to change and we will have brand new cards. If you can wait until augustish when the new line of CPUs from Intel comes out.
As for the 2x16 over 4x8 Your CPUs optimal RAM setup is dual channel and not quadrochannel so it will just work better.
And in regards to watercooling, you can get very close performance to closed loop watercooling kits with high end air coolers, and the air coolers run quieter. So unless you're planning on a custom loop, I'd go with air cooling.
Lastly, as for the PSU. It is not very good to go overkill with the PSU. 1000 watts is stretching it a bit, but that should be a high as you go. Also make sure to get a good PSU, you can consult this guide to know which PSU to get: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html
