hello everyone, Today i mixed two different ram for speed up my laptop. I want to know that is it right to mix ram to speep up laptop. Here is details about ram:
RAM:
2GB Samsung 975MHz
1GB Micron Technology 667MHz

In CPU-z, memory tab, its showing:
Type: DDR2, Channel# Dual
SIZE: 3gb DC Mode: Symmetric

AT Memory Slot Selection:
For 2GB RAM:
MAX Band width PC2-6400(400MHZ)

For 1GB ram:

MAX Band width PC2-5300(300MHZ)

& Different CAS# latency, RAS to CAS etc. all are different. but voltage is same 1.80v

SO i want to know that if there is problem then please suggest me solution? My laptop is working fine with above changes in ram. on thing i want to know that is my laptop speed is improved with these changes?

please reply soon.

Solution
1. You should not mix and match RAM ever.
2. You are putting in RAM rated at different speeds, so I hope you manually underclocked the higher rated stick to match the lower rated one.
3. Set the timings manually to match the RAM with the worse (higher is worse) timings.

So what i do to set the timing manually?

Hi

If the PC is running ok with both memory 2MB + 1MB then you are probably OK

You could confirm by running memtest86

Use a current version of CPU-Z
Look at the CPU Z Memory tab for what the memory is actually running at
Not what it is capable of which is shown on SPD tab

providing it is set at speed of slowest memory module you are OK

Laptops usually lack over clocking features found on desktops

What Windows version ?
Vista & 7 or 8 will benefit with extra memory
did you go from 1 to 3 or 2 to 3 ?

Hi Mike,

I did not saw any problem after adding 2gb ddr2 ram,
I am using window 7 ultimate. I go from 2gb (1gb two sticks )to 3gb
AT CPU-z its showing memory running 3GB

You are very lucky! at JEDEC 333 both your memory sticks run the same timings, so you are in the clear in that aspect. I would however run memtest86 or memtest86+ over night to be sure the sticks are playing well together.

Sure, just make sure these are *consecutive* runs, as in let it run by itself without touching it for about 8 hours.
