Playback of HD video is jerky. I keep getting "Display adapter stopped responding and has recovered" I know my drivers are up to date. Is there a higher spec card I could use with this machine?

It's very possible that your GPU is starting to fail - it's a decade old now, after all, and even at the time, was an entry-level OEM build-type of GPU. Given that this is very likely a pre-built, your upgrade options are extremely limited as you appear to have the AGP version of the card (from the Dimension 8300 manual).

AGP was phased out a long time ago and the best you can get is an old AGP-version of the HD4670 and you'll have to pay way more than the performance indicates to get a working one at this point. I don't recommend putting money in a PC this old.
