WiFi range is too small on modem/router, how to increase range?

Hey guys,

So as the title says, I have a modem/router combo and the WiFi range on that is just too small. I have it situated upstairs and when I go downstairs, the signal becomes really weak...to the point where electronics requiring WiFi are constantly disconnecting. I have an extra router sitting around that's not really doing anything. I was wondering if there was a way to use that router so I can increase the WiFi range in my house instead of having to use the router that's embedded in my modem?

What I tried doing is disabling the DHCP on the modem/router combo, and then I plugged the WAN on my other router to one of the LAN inputs on my modem/router combo and when I tried to get internet access, it didn't work. I even tried getting internet by plugging in one of my ethernet cables from the LAN ports on my other router to my computer directly and that didn't seem to give any connection either.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

I would also turn-off any Wi-Fi that is on the modem/router combo that you are having problems with. You can use the same Wi-Fi SSID (from the old one) and passphrase on the Wi-Fi router that you want hooked-up, so that you don't have to go and change anything on each device.

Computers will randomly work or not work depending on which DHCP server responds first to their request for an ip address. Or if you connect them differently, things will work, but you will get weirdness in communication between connected devices and the internet because of the two different firewalls. It could be possible to make either work, but that would require a lot more explanation. The simple thing is to only use one and to use the one that will be automatically configured correctly (the one on your modem)
