Good late eve fellow pc enthusiasts,

I was wondering if you would be so kind to impart your knowledge and help for me as i've found myself locked out of my own system.

My situation started when I had upgraded my video card from an Radeon HD7970 to an R9 290x and my system was telling me that it was a 280x which prompted me to get to this sorry state I find myself in. I thought the problem was that there were too many AMD Catalyst downloads still in my system from previous driver upgrades so I decided to delete all of the AMD drivers with the intention of downloading them again once I got back into windows.

What happened afterwards, I do not know why but when the Windows 7 login is reached, my interface peripherals shut off and no longer had Mouse or Keyboard function. I do have both working within the EZ Bios stage but when I go to Windows the function does not load and I am unable to do anything but reboot. Its as if the usbs shut off and refuses to acknowledge that the two are plugged in.

I attempted to do things in the Bios but nothing has seemed to work. So I am at a dead end. I most likely made it worse messing within the Bios.

Everything looks and feels normal accept at the Windows log in - whether safe mode or safe mode with connectivity. Same no keyboard and no mouse.

What are the steps I can take to regain access into Windows. What could I have done and how do I go about fixing it

AMD FX 8650 8 Core 4.3 ghz
AMD HD7970 (I took the R9 out)
GSkill Ripjaws 8gig Ram
Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit
ASUS Sabertooth 99FX R2.0

Solution
You are using a USB mouse?

Try using a PS2 mouse . A very cheap one should suffice and let you uninstall all the graphics drivers , and reinstall the motherboard drivers , followed by the latest graphics driver .
After that if your card still thinks its a 280x it probably is

Yes it's the darndest thing, the mouse and keyboard lights up, you can manipulate the cursor right up until " Windows Start" kicks in --- then they'll completely go dark and I can't use them at the log in screen.

Well I did pretty much everything from using the PS2 mouse and other suggestions... I finally decided to stick the actual Windows disc in to see what would happen...and it... WORKED. I guess it must have triggered the windows recovery because the mouse decided to work and it booted back to a workable state. After that, the automatic updates found the drivers and the system was able to be stabilized.
