Computer Freezes and Requires a Hard Restart

My computer will freeze and I have to go through a hard restart. When it freezes there is no blue screen, everything just stops. The lights on my keyboard freeze but the lights on my mouse don't. 90% of the freezes occur when I'm playing CS:GO. I replaced my newer PSU with my old one and was doing great for about 2 days before it started freezing again. Now it's back to freezing about ever hour or so when I'm playing a game.

Solution
You replaced a TOP quality PSU with an average one at best. Put the Seasonic back in.

Your CPU is 40c under gaming load? That does NOT sound right. too low.
Counter Strike has problems. Many of these crashes are bugs that literally date back to 2005. Its almost like its random. Some people get hit, and others do not. And then a new patch comes out, and some people see the problems stop, others suddenly start having problems, and some of the people just keep having the same old problems.

Its one of the strangest situations that I have ever attempted to understand. But there seems to be no rhyme or reason for the problems it seems to create for some of the people that love to play that game. To me its mind boggling that a game could be out for 10 full years and still have some of the same problems it had way back then. If you google "Counter Strike Crash Bug" you will get pages and pages of just all kinds of people asking for help with the problems affecting their computers.

My CPU stays around 40c. The PSU I had in before was an Seasonic X-850 and I replaced that with my Corsair Gaming Series 700-Watt.

It doesn't only crash when I play CS:GO. It'll freeze sometimes when I'm watching Twitch or playing any other game.

I know. Remember I said suddenly start having problems? It's not just with CS. Their entire systems often have problems they never had before. No rhyme or reason. Rebooting does not make all of the problems going away. Uninstalling the game does not even seem to make the problems go away. Which makes me think that they might be changing things in the registry, and I try very hard not to touch a registry. Sometimes, even a single change, even if by accident, and create massive headaches for people.

Now after saying that:

- If you have an Nvidia graphics card, and you installed the video driver that came out last week, you might want to upgrade to the one that came out today (or yesterday, I haven't looked at this one yet,) because there were known issues with last weeks driver. I got the notice from GeForce Experience that a new driver was ready to install this morning, and I killed the screen. I will wait a day or two to see what I see and hear about it.

- If you have an AMD card, and you installed the beta driver they released last week, you might want to roll back your video card driver. They too have some issues in that beta driver. Not as bad as the Nvidia one, but its affecting some people apparently.

No I had the Seasonic in when it started crashing. I replaced it with my Corsair one and it didnt crash for about 2 days but then it started freezing again. I have a noctua nh-d14 cpu cooler and it really never goes too far above 40c.

There is no blue screen. Everything just freezes and I have to turn the whole computer off to get it going again. I can't even move the cursor. If there was music playing it freezes too.

I am leaning towards either a memory or CPU problem here. Something is causing the system to just lock up. Without warning.

Lets test the memory first. I want you to click on the link below and download the ISO image they have there. Once its downloaded, burn that ISO image to disc. You will then be able to boot from the disc so that windows is not interfering with the memory test. In a way, this program with test your CPU some as well as your memory extensively. You will want to run this for a minimum of 10 hours, so I suggest setting it up before you go to sleep, and then let it continue for awhile after you get up. If there are any problems found, it will tell you on the screen.

WELL I replaced the RAM in my computer with RAM from another computer that I knew for sure had no problems and the freezing still occurs. So as of right now I know its not the PSU or RAM. Do you think it could be a dying motherboard?

I know that this Topic is a year old, but I think that I've possibly found the solution!

After switching from Displayport 1.2 cable (Accell brand) to HDMI, random freezes has stopped. :bounce:

Purchased an HDMI 2.0 cable from Monoprice for $7.99 (including shipping) & issue fixed. Originally thought it to be Logitech keyboard/mouse drivers, don't know why I installed the whole package anyway, as both worked fine, just has a few more features.

Looks like the HDMI cable has fixed things for me, will report back if not. This issue has been dogging me since I upgraded my DP 1.1 cable to the Accell 1.2 cable, but didn't notice anything out of order right away. The computer (in my specs below) would just freeze out of the blue, or after the screensaver kicked in.

Don't know if it's a driver issue with DP (have upgraded nVidia drivers 6-8 times since installing), so there's a possibility that the driver package may not be fully addressing DP connections, or I have a cloned cable. It was a sealed Accell DP 1.2 cable, swapped the cable to me other PC, if that one freezes, I'll for sure know the issue.

Hope that this helps someone, and like I stated, if the issue is not fixed, will report back. ;-)

Dude if this works I owe you soooo much, Same problem. Never even thought it could be my screen cable. I have a Dmi cable for the 144hz Monitor and a hdmi cable for my 2nd screen. My hdmi cable is unmarked and bought at best buy so I'm betting/hoping that's the culprit.

I have the same Cpu AMD FX- 9590
Same Cpu Fan : Noctua NH-D15 SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 x 2 PWM Fans
Same Motherboard : ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 (Socket 942)

Unfortunately, you may not have 144Hz monitor if you switch from DP to HDMI. For whatever reason, many has stated the max for HDMI is 60Hz, but I don't have a 144Hz monitor or Smart TV to confirm that.

Hopefully you're sorted out by now! ;)

Hi Cat,

I really appreciate your solution! I also run into this monitor crash problem when playing csgo and trying to Alt – Tab
So far, it's been working well?
Can I know your nVidia version?
Also, do you find any other solution for this issue?

My NVIDIA card (was) a GTX 960 in the PC, now it a GTX 1070. However, I tried what I felt to be a defective (or cloned) cable on a AMD card & it acted up also. So in my case, it was the cable. Those who ordered & received a Genuine Accell brand DP 1.2 cable may have better results than I. Made a mistake in saving $5-6 over the Newegg DP 1.2 cable, though the truth is, there's only a handful of corporations who has certified DP cables. This can be confirmed by the 'DP' emblem on the tab. If not there, it may or may not be fully DP compliant.

The Nippon DP 1.1a cable (which wasn't certified) performed better than the Accell cable did, evidently was a clone, as there are many such items out there. A low cost HDMI Monoprice HDMI 2.0 cable is now powering my GTX 1070 great, will give DP a shot again when I can afford a 4K UHD monitor, and these drops to a 24" size, as well as become the norm for many enthusiasts. I can assure everyone that I won't be going cheap on the DP cables anymore, the GTX 1070 is DP 1.4 ready, and in reality, there's few, if any DP 1.3 monitors on the market yet.

The main thing with DP is the supply chain, be sure that these are genuine, and everything should be OK.;-)
