I'm looking to upgrade from my GTX 680 to a GTX 980ti, but my motherboard only has a single PCI Express 2.0 slot. Will the fact that it's not a 3.0 slot be a big bottleneck? I know like 1-2 years ago it wasn't a bottleneck for any GPU really but I'm not sure currently.

At what point does a PCIe 2.0 motherboard bottleneck a PCIe 3.0 GPU? Wouldn't newer games also be an issue? We are just now starting to get the full potential out of PCIe 3.0 with the new Z170 Motherboard platform series.

"PCIe 2.0 standard doubles the transfer rate compared with PCIe 1.0 to 5 GT/s and the per-lane throughput rises from 250 MB/s to 500 MB/s. This means a 32-lane PCIe connector (×32) can support throughput up to 16 GB/s aggregate.

PCI Express 3.0's 8 GT/s bit rate effectively delivers 985 MB/s per lane, practically doubling the lane bandwidth relative to PCI Express 2.0 "

I have:

The PCIe 2.0 vs PCIe 3.0 may not be an issue for me now but it will be if I add a 2nd GPU or when the next series of GPU's and games come out. It would be helpful to have an updated article and video explaining it because all the older ones claiming it is not a problem will soon all be obsolete.
