Heya,

I'm buying a brand new pc and would like to upgrade my latest one, to play the newer games on a LAN.
These are its relevant current specs:

PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus P8H77-M LE Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair XMS3 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: XFX TS 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Graphics card: RadeonHD 7870 RoyalQueen (couldnt find it in the list)

My idea was to just replace the CPU and the Graphics Card (and add an SSD drive I didnt have yet) into something like this:

PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($218.98 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($95.99 @ Adorama)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Double Dissipation Video Card ($237.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $552.96

Not too pricey, not too cheap.

My questions:
- Am I correct in assuming the rest of the computer is still up to par?
- Does my motherboard support these two new pieces?
- What will be the bottleneck of this system or am I doing an overkill with one of the pieces?

Thank you very much in advance!

Solution
This is probably a more substantial upgrade, your cpu is fine for gaming

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Memory: Corsair XMS3 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($64.89 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($97.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card ($319.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $482.77

More ram, better graphics card and better ssd, if you add this your system will be solid :)
As far as I know, your mobo supports it and the rest of your comp is up to par, might want to be careful with that psu but with a gtx 970 you...

As far as I know, your mobo supports it and the rest of your comp is up to par, might want to be careful with that psu but with a gtx 970 you will be all good with a 550w, a r9 280x can't run on a 550w, well it will be a tight squeeze but a gtx 970 is fine on it.

Solution
1. your current proc is fine for gaming.
The only good upgrade is only to go for i7 but this is not necessary for gaming. Going to i5 4690 will not bring anything substantial. I would say, keep your i5 3570.
2. 8GB should be already enough for gaming but you can add the second 1x8GB to have it run as dual-channel, if you want. Not a must but it would be nice.
3. Get better the GTX970, best buy GPU available now.
4. The Samsung EVO SSD is really nice. Get it!
5. 550W is more than enough for a single GTX970. No need to replace it.
6. keep the H77 mobo, not worth upgrading the mobo.

I agree with above. Stick with the same CPU you have now and upgrade the video card to a GTX 970, one more stick of ram and an SSD.

Anyways, if you were to upgrade the CPU to the one you mentioned, you would also need a new LGA 1150 motherboard as your current one is not compatible (LGA 1155).

Also, quite honestly you will not see a susbstantial difference to justify you getting the i5-4690 over your current CPU. What you have is PLENTY fast.
