Windows doesn't recognize external HD connected via USB3/SATA

Computer: Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with failing 500GB HD
New HD: WD7500BPKX
USB3 adapter: Sabrent, with separate power supply, connected to USB2 port
Clone software: Macrium Reflect v6
Background: Macrium saw the new drive. Clone failed part-way through with "Read failure - Broken pipe". Ran chkdsk on old drive. Tried clone again but now Macrium doesn't see the new drive.
Problem: Windows sees the new drive as removable media. When I try to format it, Windows says there is no disk in Drive D.
