Games won't run in fullscreen mode

Hi,

Most games that I download from Steam automatically try to run in fullscreen when I start them. However, usually, this doesn't work. I'll start a game, my two screens go black then flicker grey (so does my third, if it's on) and I'll hear the game audio start, but then the audio stops, the screen flickers black and grey again, and i'm back on desktop view, with whatever other programs I have open in front of me (usually Steam and a web browser). I'll click on the icon in the taskbar, and it does the same thing. Sometimes Alt + Enter works, to get it to run windowed and let me change the display settings, but most of the time, it doesn't work. I have to deal with this constantly and it's getting really annoying. Anyone know of a way to fix this, or change it so that ALL games automatically try to launch in windowed mode BEFORE they try fullscreen? Here are my specs:

  • Windows 8.1
    Intel Core i7-4820K CPU @ 3.70GHz
    8 GB RAM
    ~4 TB storage
    Main monitor native resolution: 1920 x 1080, secondary monitor native resolution: 1280 x 1024, tertiary monitor native resolution: 1920 x 1080
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

Thanks!

Actually, I think I may have found a solution-- disabling my other monitors. Because I have different resolutions, it screws up the programs for some reason, and so pressing the Windows key + P and choosing PC screen only makes it so that the computer doesn't output to the other monitors and so there is no confusion about which resolution to use. My plan is that hopefully this will allow me to run auto-fullscreen games long enough to get into the Options and enable windowed mode, then reconnect my other monitors. For some reason, I never found this solution whenever I searched my problem online, so I'm writing it down here for someone else to find if they have a similar problem.
