My friend is building a budget pc to play recent games on, browse the web and watch videos on.
He will NOT be doing cpu intensive tasks like streaming, video editing or modelling.
He will NOT be overclocking so will not need an unlocked processor or cooler other than the stock.
I have wittled the choice down to 2 CPU's- the i3 4160 and the FX6300.
I know that the i3 comes with integrated graphics which may be useful to him as it means he could buy the main parts and then pay for the GPU separately later. From my personal experience i know that intel cpus tend to have better single core performance than AMD's.
The price difference is minimal so that isn't a worry but I am just looking for a second opinion on what would be better suited to my friend.
Thanks as always TH companions!

The difference between the two for what your friend is doing will be minimal (FX-6300 has the slighter edge...see link). However I would go with the intel because he will have more of an upgrade path in the future with the intel. Even if he didn't upgrade the intel CPU, if he decided he wanted to play taxing games, he can add a high end GPU and will get less of a bottleneck with the intel compared to the FX series. In addition, the intel CPU uses less power so it will save a little on the electric bill.

For just gaming, I think the i3-4160 will be superior.
Here is an older comparison of a FX-6300 and a i3-3223(not as capable as a i3-4160)

The integrated intel video is adequate for HD video playback and gaming that does not include fast motion.

The good thing about i3 is that you have a upgrade path to i5 or even i7.
If your motherboard is H97 or Z97 the upgrade possibility will include broadwell.
With FX-6300, your only upgrade is from 6 to 8 cores.
That is not very useful since few games use more than 2 fast cores.

FWIW.
I will never again build without a ssd for the "C" drive. It makes everything you do much quicker.
120gb is minimum, it will hold the os and a handful of games. If you can go 240gb, you may never need a hard drive.

I would defer on the hard drive unless you need to store large files such as video's.
It is easy to add a hard drive later.
Samsung EVO is a good choice.
Intel 730 is OK too.
