Hi - i was hoping someone could explain something to me. With graphics cards, do EVGA/Radeon actually make the cards, or do they merely sell them on the behalf of Nvidia or AMD? I ask because i've been following the release of the GTX 980 Ti - is that going to only be avaliable from GeForce or will other manufacturers sell it too. Forgive me if this comes across as a nooby question.

You are mixing terms somewhat. AMD sells radeon card, while Nvidia sells Geforce cards. (Ford sells mustangs, along with other cars, while Chevy sells Camaro's.) Both AMD and Nvidia sell other brands of cards such as the Firepro or Quadro.

Both AMD and Nvidia are both "fabless" companies in that they only design the chips. They both use TSMC to make the chips. They then sell these to companies such as XFX, EVGA, Sapphire, etc. Hopefully this helps clear that up.

Lets add a little to the above post. He is right, but he left out something.
AMD and Nvidia always make what is called a reference card. This is a complete card including the GPU (Graphics Processor Unit), memory and so on for each model of video card they offer. And they sell these to their partner companies. The partner companies he listed above, can sell those reference cards, but they are also free to buy just the GPU, and make their own unique circuit board to mount the GPU and the memory and all that, which allows them to customize the cooling solution on the video cards.

So when you see something like the Asus Strix, those are custom made cards. Take a look at this page I link below, and it will give you a good example of how these third party companies create unique versions of the same card. Cooling Solution and Speed of the GPU are two of the ways these partner companies can distinguish themselves in the marketplace.

Oh ok i think i get it - so how long do you think it will be before we see third party companies doing this with the GTX 980 Ti??

Probably not long. Every now and then AMD and Nvidia don't allow custom cards. But I doubt the 980TI will be such a beast. The cooler being used is already a good one, so unless you need one even better due to your OC targets even the stock cards should be fine. From what I've seen it's not like the 290/290x where the stock cooler wasn't good enough and the card downclocked to much.

Tomorrow. Apparently, the custom cards have been done for awhile now. Everyone has just been waiting for Nvidia to make the announcement.
