New SSD, Windows 8.1, not booting properly

I've looked through a couple of forums on this and can't seem to find the steps to resolve my issue. Which is basically a mash up of a few issues on the forums I've searched.

I have an old HP desktop computer that I've upgraded. I added more memory and upgraded to Windows 8.1 and things were excellent. The only problem was the computer was slow so I decided to buy an SSD and upgrade to that. This is where my problems started.

I made the SSD active and cloned the HD to it. All the files seem to be there and it was good to go. When I restarted though, it was still booting from the HD. I unplugged the HD and when I booted up again I got the install a boot disc error.

I plugged the HD back in and hit the esc key to change the boot order. When I changed it to boot from the SSD, I got the 0xC000000E error.

I took another step back and booted from the Windows install disc. That worked but the computer booted from the disc only and it stopped recognizing the SSD.

I went back and replugged in the original HD and am back to booting from that one.

Even if I try to boot from the disc it's only working from the disc and not either of the hard drives. When I go into disk management and look at the SSD when it's booted from the installation disc, the drive is no longer active.

What am I doing wrong that it won't boot from the SSD? Or that it it not recognizing the SSD?

I'd like to avoid having to bring this sucker in to a repair place to have them do it. I'm sure I'm missing a step somewhere but going through all the lists I'm wondering if it's a bigger issue? I tried to clone the drive again but it wouldn't let me.

Help!

To me it sounds like your motherbd is in need of a Bios update, hopefully to one which better supports SSD's. You should also check the SSD for a firmware update. It also sounds like you didnt clone the system partition which contains the boot files, or they copied over corrupted.

Which cloning software did you use?
Which motherbd do you have?
Which SSD did you get?

Although you description of the problem you're experiencing isn't entirely clear to me I'm assuming at the least that your HDD currently boots without incident and functions without any problems, your SSD notwithstanding.

If that be so, try this...

Again clone the contents of the HDD to the SSD. IMMEDIATELY following the disk-cloning operation DISCONNECT your HDD from the system.

Ensure that your SSD is connected to the motherboard's first SATA port (connector) and boot to the SSD, initially checking the BIOS during the boot to determine that the boot priority order indicates a first boot to the SSD.

Assuming the boot to the SSD goes without a hitch, power-down the PC and then reconnect the HDD. See how it goes...

EASEUS cloning software.
Not sure about the motherboard, how do I find that out?
SanDisk 128GB Solid State Drive - Internal, 2.5" Form Factor, SATA, 6Gb/s, Read 475MB/s, Write 375MB/s, Black - SDSSDP-128G-G25

How would I update the motherboard?
