Hey guys, so I've recently built a new PC, i7 4790k, 16 GB ram, 21:9 2560*1080 60 Hz monitor. What I did not choose to upgrade was the graphics card. I am currently running a 660 GTX and it's just not cutting it lately.

So, as you all know (for those who don't live under a rock) the 980 Ti is out available for pre-order, Australia in my case.

I've been researching heaps and reading lots of forums but I still can't seem to decide between the 970, 980 or 980 Ti. It really confuses me when people say "buy what you can afford". Well, most people can save up and buy the 980 Ti eventually, so I don't understand the whole, 'i can afford thing'. Me, personally (student attending uni) I have saved up enough to buy a titan x. Right now I am leaning more towards the 970 because it is the best value for the money you pay.
However, I am wondering whether i should buy a 980 or 980 Ti so that it lasts longer, thus I don't have buy another card in the near future as the 970 becomes obsolete.

Basically, I want to know which card I should get so I save the most amount of money in the future.

Few concerns as well, looking at current games, v ram needed for max settings will probably be more than 4 GB in 2016. This would make the 970 obsolete in a year. BUT, direct x 12 may support v ram stacking so 970 SLI would be a good upgrade. This is applicable to the 980 as well (Since pretty much same vram, the 970 3.5gb issue is mostly fixed with new drivers, and if a game is gunna use more than 3.5gb it would probably use more than 4gb anyway)

To conclude, I think my best options are 970, then SLI in the future or replace with a better card, or 980 Ti and hope it doesn't become obsolete soon. (I am looking at around 4-5 years life span)

Which option would be of better value? or have you got another suggestion?

Also, I am looking to run games at at least 35 fps max settings, and pretty interested to use DSR x1.5 or 2 if possible. I currently play WoT, GTA5 and BF4.

Thanks!

Hello Friend,

As someone else who just recently upgraded their system, let me share my advice. You can see my system specs in my signature for reference of the new system. My old system was a Intel Q6600 2.4GHz, 6GB DDR2, and a AMD 5830. As you can image playing BF4 was a bit of a struggle. Here is what I found in the video card area during my 6 months of research.

Get the GTX 970, not the 980. SLI 970's out perform the 980 for the SAME PRICE. Furthermore, if your system can 3-Way SLI this idea is even better. I got the Gigabyte 970 G1 now and can play any game, maxed out settings, all at 1080p and some at 1440p at 60+ FPS (anymore is really not needed in my opinion). The only issue I foresee if 4K and/or games in 3 years from now...

The only issue I foresee if 4K and/or games in 3 years from now. Therefore, I got the 970 now and will get a second one when I see performance issues in games and the price of the 970's have dropped. That will give me another 2 years or so on the newest games at 4K without an issue. If you can 3-Way SLI, this is an even better idea as you just add a third card later on as well.

I am all for overkill and making the best system possible, but also for the best price. The 970's will do that, the 980 will push you a little over (unless you are running 4K now and cannot 3-Way SLI later on). Just remember, the moment you hit "CONFIRM ORDER" regardless of what you get, your stuff is already old. Technology moves too fast, so get the best card for the best buck now, and review your options later. Otherwise, you will never like your system and always overspend to be "the best".
