Hello everyone. I'm building a system for my sisters birthday and want some input on the build I've been working on so far.

My budget is ~$1000 CAD. I'd like to have it built and ready to go by June 29th so need to purchase really soon.

Main uses will be 1080p gaming, watching movies, school research/ word processing and web browsing.

I chose the i3 because it saves me some money to put into the graphics card. I don't know how it will affect the fps during games though. She mostly plays older games and MMO's. Nothing AAA from the past year.

Is there a cheaper graphics card that can achieve 60fps with 1080p? Maybe I can bump up to the i5 if that's possible. I understand that Seasonic is a good brand for PSU but quality varies between models?

She really likes the case so that is pretty much the only must have so far.

Anyways, here is what I have so far. I won't be needing a monitor but I do need the OS. I know that $100 could really help somewhere but I do not think there is any other way I can get a copy of WIndows.

- 8 gb ram is more than enough for what you describe the pc will be used for.
- A hybrid SSD/harddive seems a good way to expand on disk space and keep some of the SSD performance. 240 gb wil be filled very quick.
- Slightly cheaper R9 280x
- 520 watt Seasonic, which will also be more than enough to power the system.

Solution
MB - The ASROCK board sports built-in WiFi and Bluetooth.
MEM - Same specs, but checaper modules below.
SSD - The Samsung is going to be a bit quicker than the Crucial. Either would be fine.
GPU - Switched to a GTX 970 with a blower style fan which will exhaust air out the back.
CASE - Switched to the Elite 130.

The i3 does not work very well with r9 280 or better, specially in terms of minimum fps.

I would suggest you to change MB (to a cheaper one), a smaller ssd paired with an HDD (drop the HDD and go with a bigger SSD if she already have a HDD) r9 290, and 1x8 gb ram, so in the future if you need to upgrade you can keep the current one (2x4gb would have a better performance, and if performance is more important you should go with 2x4gb):

If you drop the SSD or the HDD you can go with R9 290x or GTX 970 (better because of lower power consumption an heat generated):

Here is my pick, meeting budget. 1080p, for the kinds of games she will be playing, will be no problem here. I left the option open for 16gb ram later.
