Should I get the AMD FX 6300 or FX 6350 over the i3?

First of all my PC is old... I mean 8 years old. I have done all the upgrades to this toaster and I've decided it is time to retire it or sell it off. Right now playing games on this old intel dual core cpu is a nightmare, games stutter and chokes... cpu cores hitting 100% gpu usage dropping below 50% fps dropping too. Bottleneck.

I have been saving for a budget build right now [I already have a new 1TB HDD, a new gpu, and a new PSU] and I have been watching the new i3 4+ series performance in gaming I was impressed. Then some AMD guys told me to get the 6 series since it has freaking 6 CORES.... 6 CORES and I was like noway? oh yes. They sent me a video of GTA V running on all 6 cores paired with a 750 ti on High 50fps @_@ I also watched FX 6 vs i3 on Battlefield 4.... the i3 was jumping up and down in terms of processing? the FX just maintained smoothly? I do apologize for the childish remarks I am not well educated with this... what I do know is that more and more games are demanding more cores and four cores may not be enough in the future. The i3 has the same price as the hexacore but has more singlecore performance? what the hell does that mean and why would I need it? the only game that I know that needs single core performance is Torchlight II? and the i3 is also a dual core with hyper threading? I'm sick of dual cores >_< but people told me to invest on intel because they are great which I agree but a freaking hexacore cpu?

Or... should I wait for 2017 and see what new CPU's AMD and Intel has to offer?

Solution
First you need to determine in what year you'll build a new system. The recommendations in 2015, 2016 or 2017 definitely won't be the same and you need to determine what your budget is. Instead of reading everything, just check benchmarks.

Get the i3. It may not be a 6 core but each core will run way better and more efficient and also you can later upgrade it to another LGA1150 socket cpu such as an i5 4690k or an i7 4790k without having to buy a new motherboard.

I'm considering it but I'm scared... it's a dual core and I saw lagging on it when saving in BF4. The Hexacore FX cpu is utilizing everything so well :/ also I've read the future AMD zen cpu will run on AM3? I just want to avoid dual cores if possible... the i5 is wayyy too expensive for me... now with skylake and Amd zen my head is spinning even wondering If I should get a pc this year or next year :/

Get the i3 only if you're going to upgrade to another lga 1150 cpu in a year or two.

If you plan to keep the cpu longer than that, get the fx6300. The biggest deal-breaker of the fx6300 would be a negligible upgrade path (am3+ socket is dead, and anything above the 6300 are too costly to justify the upgrade). But as quadcores gradually become the sweetspot for most games, the dual core of the i3 would limit performance of the gpu, regardless of its better single core performance over the fx.

The most budget cpu I would go for is the athlon x4 860k. Quadcores, less heat output than the fx and still overclockable.

Most games dont utulize more than 2-3 cores and even if they do the performance wont boost that much and if you have a good GPU the CPU doesnt matter that much both choices are decent but i would go for the intel. Maybe if you could get the fx 8320 which would be better than both

yes I am planning on keeping the pc without upgrading except for the GPU for a long long long long long long long long long long time. You are also right about the AM3+ FOR being dead a long time so it's also worries me but the HEXACORE MAN! the games using it. Hmmm maybe I should wait for the new zencpu? or if intel decides to make new budget oriented cpu? hmmm

I guess you are right on this. 2017 then... I don't want to feel crappy after buying a new pc then new parts come in 2 years later and DDR4. This old PC is still holding well... gonna save up more thanks man. 2017 then

worth the wait... worth the wait. I have some games here and there to keep me company also some books and by that time GTA V and Arkham Knight would hopefully get some price drops as well. I would have gotten that job in that law firm if I wasn't too busy with school but... well too busy with school so saving little by little is the only thing I can do now. I guess I have to consider my father's advise on this... if it ain't broke don't fix it.

The OP already had his PC for 8 years; therefore using it for another couple years is not going to drive him mad (unlike most of us).

I'm in the same situation and I want to know what have you done.... personally I don't think that the i3 is a good choice as the fx6300 is outperfoming it in most of the big titles.... I think we should wait for Zen and see what AMD has to offer.. what do you think we should do?? The FX Series are kinda out dated it's been 3 years since their release

Specifically what big titles?
