My current CPU is a AMD Phenom 9550 AM2+ ,Quad
And my current mobo is the ASUS m3A
And would like to know if I can safely install the 8 core AM3+ processor.
Thanks and any help would be appreciated :)

You can however install an AM3 cpu in AM2+ motherboards AM3 cpu's have dual IMC's for both DDR2 and DDR3 as long as the BIOS supports the CPU. The best AM2+ CPU was the Phenom 2 X4 940BE, the best AM3 was Phenom X4 980BE and Phenom X6 1090T BE.

Very interesting.
I wonder if my BIOS supports it? mmmm

AM3+ is not limited to the 900 series chipsets.. There are plenty of 800 series and even 700 series that are AM3+ http://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/274/mb-am3plus.html It all depends on what socket and power delivery system they are paired with.

So I did look up your board it does support 45nm AM2+ 125watt cpu's. So the fastest CPU's would be the 920 or 940 Phenom x4.
