Hi guys,

Just wondering if there is any point in buying a more expensive version of a card, let's say a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Gaming card, as opposed to a Gainward Geforce GTX 980 card. I know that these price points differ so much due to quality of the coolers these companies have slapped on but I'm planning on removing these anyway and watercooling my GPU. Cheers in advance for any answers that are helpful

the advantage of buying a version with a better cooler is if you ever decide to replace the watercooled GPU, you can then just put the good air cooler back on and use it in a second system, you just have to make sure that the card you buy is the same model, they sometimes have a different version of the card, hence why some companies blocks have V.2 next to them, its for the revised model of the card not the original.

If you shop only for reference design I would say go for the cheapest option you can find as you gonna watercool it anyway and than you can bump up clocks yourself either via software or directly with custom bios.
However if you planning on heavy oc for your card then there are other parts you will be looking at. Probably most important would be the quality of VRMs used. So you will start looking at the none-reference boards with company own design.
