Tried to dual boot a laptop with a pre-installed windows 7 with XP pro (had hardware that wasn't compatible with windows 7).
XP Installed fine, then used EasyBCD but must have used it wrong because upon reboot I got the reinstall "...ntoskrnl.exe" message.
Never thought about using the repair option at setup so I formatted allocated space and tried to reinstall. Installation just loads window files then then error message appears again on reboot .
Is there any way I can get back into windows 7...I don't have the disc as it was pre-installed on laptop

...Thanks

Solution
1. Back up any important data on your Windows 7 installation.

2. Use Magic Jellybean keyfinder to get your product key from windows 7. https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

Record this information somewhere, on paper, or external media, for retrieval later when reinstalling windows 7.

3. Download a partition manager like the Gparted live CD and wipe out ALL the existing partitions on the drive. (Except the system recovery partition if it's still there. I'm assuming it's not or you'd have used it before, and it's not essential that you keep it since you have a Win7 disk now, but it might not be a bad idea just in case.)

4. Install Windows XP.

5. Install Windows 7 using the media and product key you recorded earlier. XP needs...
There should be a recovery partition, and you should be able to run system recovery at startup. Press F8 until the advanced boot menu options appear and select the repair option for windows 7.

On another note, you should also be able to reset the unit to it's factory installation using that same recovery partition. I'd first use a partition manager and make sure that the recovery partition is the only other partition aside from the one you intend to reset the OS to.

When installing a dual boot system with XP and 7, you want XP installed first. Whichever is the older OS, XP before 7, 7 before 8, and so on, because the windows boot manager is finicky that way.

Thanks for the reply darkbreeze but can't see any option to repair windows 7.

All options are...
... Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt

Enable boot logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last known good configuration
Directory services restore mode
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Start windows normally
Reboot
Return to OS choices menu

When I select any option above it goes to the "please select the operating system to start". Here the only option I have is "Windows (default)". When I press enter it goes back to the... nostril.exe error message screen.

Looks like the Windows 7 advanced boot menu options were overridden by the XP install. You will need to obtain new installation media most likely. Perhaps somebody else has another method but that would seem to be the case to me. If you can obtain somebody's Windows 7 installation disk, and boot from that, you should be able to access the windows 7 repair function and restore from your restoration partition if it's still there.

Or, you should be able to use any windows 7 installation disk with the product key that's either embedded in the bios or labeled on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. It might also be in the documentation that came with the unit.

The partition with the windows 7 is still there because I can see it when I try to install XP... Installation asks where would like to install XP.
... Will see if I can get my hands on a Windows 7 disc...

Thanks again

Thanks darkbreeze... I used the repair option on the windows 7 disc and it worked like a charm.
Still want to dual boot with XP tho, but having a bit of a strange issue.
Tried installing XP again by rebooting with the XP disc in... XP seemed to install ok but got the error message at reboot. So I repaired with the windows 7 disc again. Then I formatted the partition I had XP on then deleted it and merged with original partition rebooted and partitioned again. Tried to install XP again but still getting the ntoskrnl.exe error message at reboot...
... Any ideas?
