elementary OS Freya

I am currently in the process of installing OSX Yosemite but having much difficulty because of hardware compatibility. So I was looking for a less time consuming solution and I came across this beautiful Linux distribution. So my questions are, does it function as good as it looks(smooth animations and transitions) and is it free or is the "Donation" mandatory. Because I would honestly like to try it before I buy it. Especially when it come to some fly by night linux distro I've never heard of.

I have tried ubuntu, linux mint, puppy linux and a few other's. i believe almost all distro's are free no donation required. I believe Red Hat linux is not free however. Enjoy and learn as much as you can and be virus free.

ElementaryOS is 'free' but not well liked by the linux community because of its stance on 'donations'. ElementaryOS is basically just Ubuntu with a slightly different OSX-esque interface.
