I need help purchasing a better CPU for my PC that I've had for 4 years. Current specs are;
Operating system: 64bit
current processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1065T
Ram: 8g
Psu: 600w
Gpu: Gtx 970
Mobo: Asus CM1730/CM1780
Budget: Somewhat near $200
I am hoping to get better fps in games similar to Arma 3 and GTA V. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Does this look like the motherboard in it? (check the model number on the inside)

If that's the one, you can upgrade to a max Phenom II X6 1100T, which would only give you a 10% increase in CPU performance. I would say it's best to save your money for a better, newer build later.

You could overclock it as it is right now I think, but you may be limited to adjusting the base frequency... I've never dealt with Phenoms but the 1100T would allow you to adjust the multiplier for better overclocking.

Since the 1100T is the flagship part, it's still ghastly expensive online...

Since the 1100T is the flagship part, it's still ghastly expensive online. You're looking at $150-200, and I honestly don't think that's worth it. I'd almost salvage your GTX 970, RAM, and power supply, and make a new build based off of an Intel i5. GTA V and newer games will want more than what your current motherboard can give you.

Hope this helps :)

Yes that is the correct board and thank you for the info! I'm thinking my plan is to salvage the parts like you suggested and save up for a new rig. I've heard intel CPU's preform much better than AMD anyhow. Thanks again!

I have an Intel Pentium 4 at 3.4 ghz lying around if I were to purchase this board; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130779 would the CPU be compatible and would it fit my 970?

Edit: Looks like this cpu is a lot worse haha.

Yeah, haha that's a terrible little CPU actually, it's quite old. I've been helping someone else on another thread for a sub $500 build, I might as well share it with you:

"Here's my build. If you get a refurb graphics card off ebay like this one, you can make more room and fit in an i5 like I did.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sapphire-Radeon-HD-7950-R9-280-3GB-384-Bit-GDDR5-PCI-E-3-0-Video-Graphics-Card-/361308764942?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item541fae3b0e

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core ProcessorP ($176.98 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 MotherboardP ($43.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: A-Data XPG V2 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 MemoryP ($47.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard DriveP ($47.00 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0 MicroATX Mid Tower CaseP ($26.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Certified ATX Power SupplyP ($24.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $367.93

Tell me what you think! That GPU has a 30 day return policy, and it gives you the room for that true quad-core i5 that will help with recording.

I also verified that that GPU will fit in the case. The R9 280 is a beast of a GPU for that price. It is far older than the GTX 960, but it is more powerful for sure. You'll be set for years at 1080p for the upcoming games."

Tell me what you think of that, just thought I'd pop it in :)
