Hi, I have a Sony VAIO Pentium Dual Core with 3GB of DDR2 RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit installed.. it's sometimes slow in very normal tasks like when browsing web (Firefox latest version) while watching a video for example, and sometimes in tasks even less than that, I have Avast Internet Security installed and some really normal apps, I always choose the lightest apps to run my tasks and it is still slow, I have heard that the 32bit version of Windows can be lighter and faster.. is this true? and What if I installed the Home Premium version? is Windows 8 32Bit better for me? I was also thinking about installing Ubuntu as a main operating system, I would have no problem if it's faster and it can help me doing everything I need.. I am a medical student, all my tasks on this Laptop are so simple like browsing the web and watching videos on YouTube, sometimes I play small games and that's all...I have no problem with getting a new Windows even if I have to pay for it as long as it makes this laptop work better.. thanks for this amazing site, hope you guys can help :)

Hibernate saves your ram onto your HDD, which takes time.
Hibernate isn't equal to restart, if you have done updates and hibernate, the next time you start your laptop it will be slower, because updates haven't finished, there may be broken services from the updates and so on.
Slow boot usually is due the fact that you use normal(mechanical) HDD and prolly 5400rpm one, not that a 7200rpm will make much difference.
If you can find a cheap SSD that you can put in your machine, you will see insane improvement.
There are SSDs lately that are cheaper than windows, which will give you a huge boost compared to changing to any OS.
Getting different OS or re-installing will solve the problem, temporarily, at least that's what i think.

Your laptop is pretty good for browsing.
Some HD videos may give you a trouble because of the processor, but you should be fine all around.
What do you mean by it works very slow? Define slow/fast.
You have to identify whats slowing your laptop, but it is almost sure that the HDD is the bottleneck.
If the laptop is more than 2yrs older, it may be overheating, check for cpu/gpu temps routinely.
Usually 32bit windows will run faster on such machine, as it is less demanding on RAM and is more optimized for low-end specs.
First you need to check whats really slowing you, as i said overheating/hard drive or maybe even your internet connection.

Thanks for your reply, yes my laptop is more than 2 years old, but I check the temperature regularly and I don't think it's the problem, slow\fast? umm it takes around three to four minutes to fully start up, and about the same time to shutdown, I don't have many programs on the startup list in System Configuration .. most of the times I choose to hibernate to avoid the waste of time.. my internet speed is 2mbps. I always download the videos before watching them to avoid the problems of a slow internet connection ..anyway thanks again.. and one last thing, yes or no for 32bit? yes or no for Ubuntu and if yes which version (32 or 64)? :)
