I have been using WD My passport ultra 2TB for the past 2 months. It was working fine. But for the past 4days its transfer rate is very slow like 17kbps/s.My system takes too much time to detect the drive.I have used it in different system also but the problem remains the same.I called WD customer care. They asked me to format the drive and reuse it.But still i am getting the same problem. Is there any solution or should i go for the replacement.?Is replacement available for these kind of problems??

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, sabarigem!

I'm truly sorry to hear about the slow transfer rate of your WD My Passport external. I'd recommend you to test the drive using our diagnostics utility first. Data LifeGuard Diagnostics will determine what is the health and SMART status of the drive itself, so we know what we are dealing with here. Make sure you run the QUICK and EXTENDED test from the tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cWLIlX
Another thing you should try is using a different USB cable to connect the drive, see if that will improve the speed.

Keep me posted with the results!

This is very unfortunate, @sabarigem! I'm sorry to hear about it and I hope you have that data from the drive backed up somewhere else already! :(
Now you should contact our tech support and send your RMA request. Your WD My Passport should still be covered by the warranty, so you would be provided with a replacement product.

Here are the WD support contacts: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=vn5XjF

Best of luck!

Scroll down on the page, there should be available phone support for India. Make sure you call in the working hours listed there. If you still have no answer, you can contact our customer support via e-mail and use the e-mail support instead. It is in the right column on the contact page.

Good luck! :)

Hello guys im from India
I have exactly this same problem..... i have been having low transfer speeds of between 350KBps and 700 KBps......
i have a MY PASSPORT Ultra 2TB hd which was working fine all this time and used to give high transfer speed of nearly 50-90 MBps
but from recent times my hard disk began giving low transfer speeds as specified already(350-700KBps)
my system takes much time to recognize it and also the reading and writing speeds are terribly low....
im able to transfer things from it or to it but at the cost of very low speed of 500 KBps which frequently goes to 0 bytes/s and back to 500Kbps and not beyond that ......
a 40 GB game showed it needs 1day or more to complete transfer from hd to system
DELETING a file from the hard disk also takes too long ..... a 500MB file took 30mins to delete...
i have no intention of formatting it as it contains almost 1.4 TB full of games and other data
and also just because the drive is connected to the system , the system is also slowed to a large extent
i ran the 3 tests from the WD Drive Utilites - Drive Status test , Quick Drive Test , Complete Drive test
all 3 tests FAILED....
CAN anybody get me a fix for this problem????
THANKS IN ADVANCE
