Port forwarding not working on new router

Hello all,
I recently bought a TPlink TL-WR841N to replace my E1200 linksys router. The latter router was acting up and I could not update the firmware, so I figured a new router was in order.

Sidenote, there is a main modem/router from Verizon. The routers mentioned above were for extending wireless range upstairs.

Everything works great except for a program I use called gameranger. It uses UDP port 16000.

On the old router, I would forward the port on the Verizon router for the IP address of the upstairs router. Then I would forward the IP address of my computer on the upstairs router. Both the router and my computer are configured to have static IPs.

I did the same thing with my new router and the port remains closed.

I am able to configure it for remote desktop (using 3389 and it works no problem), but the 16000 port for gameranger does not work..

Any clues? Thanks in advance

I managed to get it working, but I am not sure why. For the upstairs router, I kept the same configuration. I forwarded my computer for port 16000. I forwarded the upstairs router's IP within the main verizon router to port 15600 which works.

Where did I get 15600?

I enabled UPnP and that was the external port assigned for gameranger (UPnP did not work in any instance lol). I disabled UPnP and configured it the way I just mentioned. Internally the port is forwarded to 16000, but externally (via the upstairs router's connection to the verizon router) I forwarded port the 15600 and it worked.
