ASUS Maximus VI Extreme won't boot up, keeps giving bad codes

Hello everyone.

I've spent roughly $1800 on a new PC build, and it is really frustrating me. Every part came in yesterday. I researched and ran every part through PCPartPicker, no redflags for anything. Now everything is hooked up and my basement is a mess. I've had two people that work on PCs all day come look at it, and they haven't a clue.

My problem is mainly that the computer boots up for 2 seconds then cuts out. It gets as high as code 56 (Invalid CPU type or Speed) on a regular basis, then plummets to 36 (CPU post-memory initialization), then instantly to the double 00 (Not used). I read online that holding the ROG Connect button for 3 seconds then resetting the motherboard may be a solution.

When I do this, it stays on for maybe 3.5 seconds and it gets as high as 79 (CSM initialization) then jumps down to 36 (CPU post-memory initialization).

My idea is that I have the wrong RAM, but I doubt it. It said it was compatible, I just had to go into the BIOS and turn on XMP for the higher frequency ram. I'm using 2133MHz RAM opposed to 1600MHz. It is in the proper voltage for the CPU too. The motherboard claims it needs the BIOS to be updated in order to work with a 4th Gen i7. I have the 4790k, in which I've also ran the Flashback for the most recent BIOS update. From what the manual told me, it seems like it went by smoothly.

I have re-seated all the RAM and checked every connection. I don't get this problem.

My Processor: i7-4790k (NOT DEVILS CANYON)
My Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Extreme
My RAM: GSKILL Ripjaws X 2133MHz (2x8GB)
My PSU: Antec Edge 750w Gold Certified Fully Modular
My VC: EVGA GTX 970 4GB

I need help, I don't know if I should RMA one of these parts or I'm overlooking something relatively simplistic. I have a 4GB stick of DDR3 1600MHz RAM from a colleague at the office, I think all the memory codes I was getting earlier means it needs to be 1600MHz.

My hunch is to use this 4GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, then if it boots into the BIOS, change the XMP profile, then reset with the 2133MHz RAM.

I need help :(

I've tried re-seating the RAM in every port. The manual suggests the second and on both A & B channels.

So my suspicion is right? I need to use the 1600MHz FIRST, then enable the XMP profile in order for the 2133MHz RAM to work? Or should I just RMA the RAM and order 1600?

PCPartPicker picked up that the initial ram was 1.65v, so I exchanged the two for 1.5v. I made sure there weren't any major red flaws.

What I said above, using the 1600 RAM, if it boots into the BIOS, do I activate the XMP Profile, then swap to the 2133?

That's the thing, I can't get into the BIOS. Boots up for about 2 seconds, then drops codes to 36 and crashes.

sorry misread it thought you could access the bios

before you flashed the bios update did you clear the cmos?

That I did NOT do.. It didn't occur to me until I was already fed up with the thing this morning at 3am. I was in bed when I realized I should have done so. That's the first step with the 1600 when I test it.

dont know why but saw a post regarding similar issue same board and they said clearing their cmos after updating the bios didnt help

but clearing the cmos then redoing the bios flash worked

and also check the obvious things--ie the 24 pin and 8 pin are securely connected

and see if it posts with the 1600mhz ram as well as a double check

I will. Thank you for your help. I have ASUS Live Chat telling me that my idea with the 1600 RAM in theory should work, but to also do what you just told me.

I will update here later on today. I'm currently at work but I get off @ 3pm EST. I'll be home all night again trying to get this damn thing working. I appreciate the help and insight you've provided.

UPDATE:

(sorry I'm late)

Computer is running. My hunch was wrong, my RAM was fine. I used a "let me tell you a funny story" from my colleague's personal experience to my advantage. Turns out my other colleague that helped me, wired the whole front panel wrong. It caused a short that kept shutting the computer on and off for two seconds. I rewired it, it works well. The 6 fans make it sound like an air conditioner, wish they were a bit quieter. The CPU cooler Newegg sent me was wrong, they falsely advertised it and actually sent me the wrong product as well. My CPU on an average everyday usage sits at 37 degrees Celsius. When I game, even on a non-stressing game, it pushed 80. I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. Need to figure out how to get my CPU temps down now.

Thank you all for your help. It was much appreciated.

glad you got there in the end--i was pretty sure it could run that ram

and 80c is too high even with the stock cooler--can always start a new thread if you cant get the temps down

I ordered the Coolermaster Seidon 120m from Newegg, go figure they sent the wrong one. So I just finished with support on getting a refund for the item. I'll be ordering most likely the Corsair Hydro H50. Most likely will solve my problem.
