strange reboot behavior after OS updates

Having this problem for about 2 yrs. On my Win7 Pro system, after doing OS update, sometimes the reboot freezes after about 6 seconds of the red-blue-green-yellow glowing window panes. When I get this no amount of rebooting will fix the problem, UNTIL I turn the system off and wait at least 10 hrs. Then it boots the very first time! I thought it my be the coin battery on the MB, but I've replaced that twice.

Anyone know how to prevent this?

Boot to your windows 7 recovery or installation disc (set it in the bios to boot from cd first)

Open the repair options and try a system repair, or system restore
If you picked system restore, revert to a restore point before you installed that OS update.
