CPU temperature way too high! (AMD Phenom II 955 with CM 412S Cooler)

Hello everyone!

I recently decided to change the thermal paste on my CPU-cooler.
Removed the cooler, cleaned residue thermal paste from cooler and CPU, applied new paste and refastened the cooler onto the CPU.

The problem is that the temperature rises steadily up to 70 degrees Celcius WHEN IDLE!
When under load it never goes above 80C although the CoreTemp almost Always shows 80-90C.

I have tried to refit the cooler and also tried using less/more thermal paste but still get the same results. The CPU-fan is running something like 1200RPM all the time.

I have run out of ideas to solve this and am hoping that one of you might be able to help me.

The CPU is a AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition
The cooler is a CoolerMaster 412

Thank you in advance!

Lately I've noticed that the CPU ran a bit hotter than what it used to when I first bought the cooler. So while I was installing my new Graphics card I decided to unmount the cooler and replace the paste whiule I was at it..

I applied a thin layer onto the cooling unit as the instructions say. Then i fastened the cooler to the CPU. I am very sure that it is on tight cause I have tried mounting it several times with the same results.

I am using CPUID Hardware Monitor.

This is what I get right after the computer is turned on:

And this is a couple of minutes later without load:

If the cooler is not moved or removed, thermal paste usually is fine for the life of the system. If the temperature readings are accurate, then the cooler is not installed correctly. What is the CPU temperature in the BIOS (it isn't idle, but it isn't that busy)? What are the thermal margins according to AMD Overdrive? If CPUID Hardware Monitor is correct, then the thermal margins will be quite low and close to 0°C at full load or the CPU throttles (which explains why it doesn't get hotter than 80°C).

Alright, I will keep that in mind until next time.

This is what I get from my BIOS:

This is from AMD Overdrive:

What do you think?

I still think the cooler is not installed correctly; it isn't fully in contact with the CPU or there's too much thermal paste. The purpose of thermal paste is to fill the voids, not to isolate the CPU from the heat sink; that's why I usually apply very little paste and I spread it very very thin using a credit card. The size of a grain of rice should be enough; pea size is an awful lot.

I have tried with different amounts of paste but I will give it another go with even less. Will report back when I'm done.

Alright, so I reapplied thermal paste the size of a grain of rice and was extra careful when remounting the cooler. It's as sturdy and tight as possible.

Unfortunately it made no difference whatsoever on the temperature.

Might there be something wrong with the temperature sensor or the CPU itself? Or am I missing something obvious?

The temperature was 68C before I removed it.

Q-Fan gives me the option for Performance, Optimal or Disabled. As much as I'm aware Q-Fan did not do any difference at all. The fan speeds just keep going on max, like when the feature is disabled.

Sorry, I just noticed the thermal margins at idle are -20.5°C which isn't possible and your conclusion about the sensor being defective probably is correct. If you read post #4 at http://www.overclock.net/t/1496727/thermal-margin-reached-at-only-48c you'll probably come to the conclusion the issue could be with the CPU. At this point I suggest you contact AMD and provide them with pictures of AOD at idle and at full load.

I don't understand much of that post but I have contacted AMD support forums now and am waiting for a reply. Do you know if there is a way I could contact them directly?

Not sure if it is safe to put the processor under full load when the idle temperature is this high.
