Should I build a 4790K-based PC now or should I wait for Skylake? I mostly play games, code stuff and render 3D models. How much of an improvement will it be? Will I lock myself out from new platforms going with 4790K, since Skylake is going to have a new chipset?

Solution
If you're unsure, you can wait until skylake comes out and there are actual benchmarks. Going with either will 'lock' yourself out since chipsets change every couple of cpu releases anymore. It went from 1155 to 1150, now to 1151 and by the time it's worth upgrading again there will likely be another socket change. Motherboards haven't lasted multiple builds for awhile now, just plan on needing a new motherboard by the time the performance is worth upgrading for.
