Hi, new here in this community! I have a ASUS m4a88td - v evo usb3 and im looking to upgrade my CPU (Athlon x2 245 2.9 ghz) to a phenom II x4 955 but instead i found a Phenom II x4 B97. Official ASUS site says my mobo is compatible with the 955 but it doesnt mention anything about the B97 althouhg other sites says they are compatible. Is there any difference between them? Thanks!

Solution
You can buy a used Phenom II X4 955 or 965 at a decent price. A Phenom II X4 980 or a Phenom II X6 1090T or 1100T is quite a bit more expensive. Personally I wouldn't $100 or more on such an old platform.
In theory it should work since it's the same as the Phenom II x4 955, but is the Phenom II x4 B97 less expensive (it doesn't include a heat sink and fan)? As long as the BIOS detects it properly or it detects it as a Phenom II x4 955, then you'll be fine. Have you found evidence Asus really support that business CPU in the BIOS?

Hi. I found some evidence in a site called game-debate.com and another called pc-specs.com about my mobo being able to support it but im having my doubts about it. Also, yes, it doesn't include heatsink and fan, just the cpu. My BIOS is updated to the last one available.

I understand. So what CPU would you recommend me for my build:

Asus m4a88td-v
Amd athlon ii x2 245 2.9ghz
Corsair xms3 2x4gb 1333mhz
Thermaltake tr2 500watt (was a gift, i know, not very reliable, although haven't had any issues so far)
Xfx amd r7850 oc edition 1gb
HDD samsung 250gb
Power gamer kit case
