I live in a rural area, on a one acre forested lot. Approx 10 days ago I was watching netflix, it was buffering a lot, there were no other devices on, so I signed into my router, to see what was going on . I use CableOne and the router was a motorola surfboard. There were 4 devices connected to my guest network, all with the same mac # except for the last 2 digits. I pinged them discounted them deleted the guest network, They reappeared as broadband connections. I turned on the flood lights in the yard let the dogs out, there is no living behind me or next to me, the closest house is 2 acres away and they were not home. How far away can someone be to hack your router?

Depends on their device. I would say about 50m away at max.

I suggest you go into your router settings and set up Mac filtering with those hackers Mac addresses to prevent those other devices from accessing your network.

Also change the passphrase to connect to your router and set it as WPA2. If you have it on WEP right now, no one uses that anymore because hackers found an exploit to get past WEP.

Get the Mac addresses of your devices you want to connect with so you don't accidentally exclude them from your network.

Thank you, that is unsettling. But, someone told me that they could do it from across the country, which I could not fathom.
I decided my modem needed to be updated, so I took it Cable One they replaced it with an Arris, no guest account. Very easy used the prescribed connections , I changed the password using about 20 characters, I used a phrase. On the third day, I could not connect anything and could not get into the router. So, I have since, changed the password to characters, hidden ssid name also characters, changed the prescribed wpa key to 50 characters, and am currently holding my breath. But I think I should alert the neighborhood. Thank you for the info.
