Ever since the last two Nvidia Drivers and since installing a 2nd GPU for SLI (Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming) - I have very frequent, random driver crashes while surfing and browsing with Google Chrome.

This happens whenever I browse, type, watch something, open gmail - whatever.
First the mouse will freeze, then the whole screen freeze, the monitor will go black or blink or rapidly flicker in black for a while - then it will recover.
Below on the system tray Geforce will notify my: "Driver has stopped responding and recovered ....".
This "driver stopped responding" message will appear and reappear several times before disappearing for good.

Meanwhile - the who system goes slow.
Today I was testing UFO test (checking monitor speed). The driver and chrome crashed. Screen got black. After it returned, the pc moved at crawling speed. Mouse barely moved an inche per several seconds, and I had to HARD RESET my pc, since shutdown didn't work and task manager didn't came up.

I am afraid that if this continue - it may damage my two GTX 980, damage my system's Windows or even my monitor (that black fast flicker seems bad!).

This begun with SLI and the last two drivers.
I found a thread here about it, but no solution at the end of the thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/36hrd4/35286_driver_kernel_crash_with_chrome/

PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

Disable hardware acceleration in chrome's advanced settings. Oops I see you mention that. That's all there is to do about it at the moment. Ball's in their court. I've encountered the same but I'd rather disable h/w accel than test out firefox or IE hehe

Edit: even though it just cropped up with the last two nvidia drivers, somehow I have this silly feeling both nvidia and google will blame microsoft lol

here is my build:
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 SLI.
Core i5-3570k (OC to @ 4.2 GHz, auto voltage).
16 GB of G.Skill Ripjaw-X DDR3 1600Mhz (x.m.p profile)
Asus Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard
SSD 256GB Crucial M4.
HD Western Digital Black 2TB
PSU: Corsair 850AX Gold
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Case: Corsair CC600T Graphite White Special Edition
Win 8.1 64bit. Pro
Monitor: Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q 2560 x 1440p 144 MHz
Secondary Screen: 55" TV: Samsung UA55D6400 TV1080p 60 MHz (TV Connected via Pioneer VSX-823-K AV Receiver)

BTW: disabling Hardware Acceleration in Chrome seems to help/prevent crashes. But I think I need H.A to work with some apps, 60fps videos and more (like the ufo test). Never had these crashes before SLI/latest drivers.

UPDATE: Happened to me just now: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. FREEZE, SCREEN GOES BLACK and flicker. Returns with pop up message and yellow "!" near nvidia tray icon.

Also - my GPUs aren't overclocked, and they don't over-heat (34/40c.).

The issue happened to me since driver 352.86 and the current 353.06.
However I am playing The Witcher 3. So I don't think it's a good idea.

For now I will disable Hardware Acceleration and see if it helps. I also disable "allow chrome to run in the background" so it won't suck resources. Hope I won't miss the H.A feature though when browsing and watching videos.

I could roll back to 350.12 - it might help - but I might get worse performance when playing TW3 and other games.

The last two drivers were clearly messed up:
1st: when you go to Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings: Instead of having Global Settings (without profiles) and Program Settings - You now have 2 profiles in Global: "Base" and "Action Henk" WTH????
On the last driver it was "Base" and "Vegas Pro ".
So something is terribly off.

Strangely enough on Windows 7 (my other PC) Global settings looks normal and doesn't have profiles, as should be.

Yes, if you roll back you will lose your SLI profile. Hopefully Nvidia fixes this on the third attempt.

UPDATE: Sorry, it seems Nvidia removed the annoying "Action Henk" and "Base Profile" thingy from the 3D settings since yesterday night.
It is now only Global Profile - without weird sub profiles.

However the driver crashes with Chrome continue, and I even had one or two crashes in game (The Witcher 3 - although that happened when I tried a light OC).
So I hope Nvidia are working on a fix!

Are these "driver stopped responding" crashes well known? Do you think Nvidia are aware of the issue? Do you guys also have it with Chrome or other browsers?

Internet Explorer is working fine for me.

LOL. So true.
I am glad to hear I am not the only one with this issue! It drove me crazy. I was also worried about my SLI functionality.
For now I will turn off the Hardware Acceleration option in Chrome's settings.

I am not a big fan of Firefox, nor Chrome, but I find Chrome preferable (even though google are sneaky little bastards). Especially since it syncs well (bookmarks, user, etc) across my 3 main devices: gaming rig, work pc and Samsung phone.

Hey guys, I am writing again to talk about other issues regarding the 2 latest NVidia drivers (352.86 and 353.06).
It seems to cause a lot of crashes to desktop with The Witcher 3 - and I can only assume other games.
what happens is you get a freeze, audio still playing in the background but no video, if you press ALT TAB it CTD, otherwise it will CTD on it's own eventually.
I am using manual OC, but I toned it down a lot and still no good.

I read a lot about it, seems people are really pissed off at Nvidia because of the crashes on Chrome and also and freezing/CTD on The Witcher 3.

Some people suggested removing Experience and removing HD AUDIO DRIVER - but I use GeForce Experience and I think I need the driver when using my 2nd screen (the AV receiver with 5.1 home cinema and TV).

Anyone else having this? Any fix?
Seem to be a common issue on 980 and 980 SLI.
New drivers suck, hope Nvidia fix this ASAP.

Same problem here. Noticed it instantly on installing a second GTX980. SLI certainly seems to exacerbate the problem.

I don't browse much on my gaming machine, but it would be nice to be able to. I have found that games don't recover well if you are alt-tabbed and the display driver crashes. Usually ends up in a process kill. Luckily I haven't seemed to have any crashes in the Battlefield launcher which would be quite annoying.

New Batman Nvidia Driver and Chrome still crashes (driver stopped responding crash) while browsing - mainly with SLI.
It has been 3 drivers now, and Nvidia have yet to fix the issue!
What the hell is wrong with them?

The only fix is disabling Hardware Acceleration in Chrome's settings - but then you get horrible tearing during youtube videos and other videos.

NVIDIA SCREWED UP BIG... Will we ever get this fixed?

Dear User,

Thank you for using Toms Hardware Forum ! We're glad to assist you with your tech problem. I understand that your Chrome frequently crashes with GTX 980 driver stopped responding error. We'll help you with this regard.

Disable hardware acceleration feature in Google Chrome. The steps are given as under:

2. Click Menu icon on top right corner, select Settings from the menu list.
3. Click “Show advanced settings” link.
