Asus p8z77 not detecting bootable flash drive

I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 (which I got via Dreamspark, so no optical media) onto a new build with a p8z77 mobo and a Barracuda hard drive. The system boots into BIOS fine, but it simply doesn't detect the bootable USB media at all. I've tried plugging it into the case's USB ports as well as one of the ones on the mobo itself, but to no avail. What else can I try?

I'm on Mac, and the Windows install I've got in VirtualBox always gives me a hard time working with flash drives, so Rufus on my VM isn't really an option. Are there any non-Windows alternatives?

I'll try that as soon as I get back to my hardware, but I have to ask out of curiosity, why does that make a difference? Aren't USB 3.0 and 2.0 backwards-compatible? And is it a factor that the flash drive itself is USB 3.0?
