Should I get a 960 or something else within the same price range?

I am deciding upon which new gpu to buy and the 960 is £200 on ebay. The 960 I found is the Asus geforce gtx 960 strix oc 4gb. I was wondering if there is anything better for £200 and if it outperforms the 960 on games like GTA V and Advanced Warfare?

wintout any monster overclocking mate the cx600 will do the job fine then - your 4130 will hold it back a bit but at the end of the day youll be able to max settings on just about anything apart from the few select titles
its a far far better buy than the 960

review of the card here - youll see why I recommend it

If you can get GTX 960 4GB cheaper then go for it otherwise get something else, maybe a R9 280x. And yes 960 4gb is fully capable of maxing out GTA 5 and advanced warfare. Maybe you have to put down some anti aliasing settings but rarely.

This is complete and utter rubbish. Don't pay attention to this missinformation.

Firstly a 960 4GB version is a con, as it can't fully utilize the extra Vram over the standard model. The card is nowhere near powerful enough to do so.

On top of this it will absolutely not be bale to max out GTA 5 on any sort of palyable frame rate. To do so on 1080p you need at least a 970 GTX, on higher res you need to move to 980 and higher.

If you are ok with 60 FPS on medium to high and NO AA or filtering etc, a 280x can perform well.

However the 960 is mid range and won't give you what you are asking for.

Mate...please don't quote youtube videos as a source for information.

My advice is based on real world experience testing cards, building systems for people and using highly regarded sites for their benchmarks which are backed by proven test methodologies and always detailed before any test.

Nor a 960 nor a 280x can max "any AAA title" out. You need to relearn about GPU's and look into polishing up your knowledge.

Don't go post nonsense on this forum, thinking you are in a position to advise someone because you saw a video once.

So please, show us irrefutable proof of a 960 maxing out GTA 5 on all fronts including AA etc and giving stable and high FPS.

If you do, I will accept your claims and delete my account with over 150 solutions and openly admit I know nothing.

Otherwise stop embarrassing yourself and stop posting your stupidity

Dashotshot is bang on the money here - I cant max all games at a locked 60fps with my 970 let alone with a 280x (until I Crossfired it) - the 960 is mid range - the 280x was high end 2 years ago - its showing its age now but is still a decent card for high settings - better than the 960.

What according to you is high FPS? For me 30 FPS is extremely playable. I am not claiming the R9 280x or even a GTX 960 can max out all titles with 60FPS but atleast these cards are capable of giving 30 FPS on mostly any game. I will tell you the report about GTA 5 in couple of hours. What I have currently is Witcher 3 and GTX 960 4gb plays it extremely well with average FPS around 31-32 with all sliders to the max including hair works. I don't have any complain playing witcher 3 at around 30 FPS.

Never had a problem with them - used xfx 7850/7870's in the past & they're still running 2-3 years down the line

Bear in mind the theoretical power draw with a 290 is double that of a gtx 960 - if you're sensible & vsync at 60fps it'll rarely pull 200w though - you still need a 600w PSU to run one safely though.

You did say a 960 can max these games out. It absolutely can not even come close, not at 30FPS not at 20FPS.

60 FPS is the measure, however 30 is totally playable, not adviseable for shooters though

Irrespective of that, you are definitely not setting everything including hairworks to "max" and using AA on Witcher 3 and with it achieving 30 FPS. Here is proof that you are fill of s***:

Same review as before, showing how tough those settings are for vastly better GPU's than yours.

GTA 5 update: Runs at an average of 31fps. (min 27) on all the possible settings to maximum(MSAA X4 and Nvidia TXAA on, can't turn on TXAA at MSAA X8 simultaneously) including advanced graphics section (.
specs: i7 2600k and GTX 960 4gb

on 1080p.
UPDATE: On urban areas (Los Santos), FPS is between 30-40 with the above mentioned settings. However when I go to countryside where there is high amount of vegetation, FPS drops and sometimes even go as low as 20. On reducing MSAA X4 to MSAA X2, FPS again rises to above 25 and game is very much playable even in the areas of high vegetation,

I think you underestimated the GTX 960.

Ehrrr....not really.

I don't measure a game's playability by 20-30 FPS lol. You can probably OC the nuts off a lesser card and get that. Completely not the point though.

OP surely didn't mean stuttery (non fluid anyway) low FPS gaming when he said "max out"

He wanted to know if a 960 can let him play GTA 5 on the best visual quality possible.

The answer is:

Only if you don't mind not being able to drive properly and enjoy the game feeling like walking through honey. Your expectations are different and you will defend the product you own to the death as you have an emotional attachment.

I use something close to 1440p res and a Titan and can not avg 60 FPS on all the settings maxed out with 4x or 8x MSAA. Something tells me you are telling fibs as tests by reputable sites show the same FPS you have WITHOUT AA (MSAA) turned on.
