Hardrive Recovery, how to know which SATA to USB to buy?

I want to attempt recovery from a hard drive that has Vista on it (I think the OS is in the hard drive? and no idea if that is even relevant) I am pretty sure I want to get a hard drive enclosure, with a 2.0 USB to plug it in to either my XP desktop, or my Windows 8 desktop.
My big question is, how do I know what size to buy? I keep seeing options of 2.5 , 3.5 and 5 something...what are those measurements of exactly? The whole drive? And if so, the long way, or the short way? Also, I think I need a SATA plug in for the drive, but how do I know for sure it is not IDE, or something else?
And, do most encloses come with a separate power cord? or are they all set-up to power the hard drive thru the USB cord?

Provided I do get the correct enclosure, do I have a solid plan here? My XP computer should be able to open up the Vista drive for me to have a look around, and get what I need off of it?

3.5 inch are normal HDDs

You could have found all of the answers to your questions by using Google. Have a look at the specs of the adapter to see if it comes with a power adaptor. You can google images of SATA and IDE plugs.

Thank you for your reply! :)
I am a couple weeks into using Google as my research tool. However, it is extremely limited from my phone.

I have read a ton of threads in this forum too, about hard disc recovery.

It seems my questions are at such a basic level (like common knowledge to many folks here) that I am having an extraordinairely difficult time to learn these more simple basics.
