Can I put an I7 4790k into a Z87 board & overclock it?

The title says it all I know the 4770k is comparable with the Z97 boards but is it possible to do vise versa

Yes, because it is the same socket, though you might have to update the bios of the Z87 motherboard to make it compatible with the new haswell line up.

Just noticed that the title you entered says Z87 and the message says Z97. Z97 motherboards should have supported the 4790K and 4690K at their release.

The 4790K came out after most Z87 motherboards did. But every company out there put out an updated BIOS to support than and the 4690K chips.

I just updated my BIOS a week ago on an AsRock Z87 motherboard board. And that made this system compatible with those chips in the process.
