Please help with HDD problem. 'There was a Problem with scanning this drive'

Hi,

I have a WD Live TV (media player) and a WD Elements 5TB external HDD plugged into it. Everything was fine and all files played without a problem. But now when the WD LIVE TV media player will not detect the HDD.

I can plug the HDD into my PC and it can see it and I can access and watch media, but when I plug it back into the media player it does not get detected. Other HDDs are detected and work without a problem.

So I plugged the WD 5TB HDD back into my PC and saw it in Explorer, then right clicked, properties, tools, Check, Scam Drive.

Then I get this message, 'There was a Problem with scanning this drive. Windows was unable to scan this drive. Close this dialogue box, then try to scan again.'

I've tried different USB ports on the PC (that work) for a total of 6 attempts but get same error each time.

Not sure what to do next.

I would rather not attempt a format as moving 4.3TB of data is not fun.

first, backup any important data that you may have on it. (all of it is better)

using a program like crystal disk info or hdtune, check the smart parameters of the drive and we'll take it from there.

I just read elsewhere on the internet that other people have had problems, normaly when the HDD is plugged into a PC and then unplugged before using the 'safely remove hardware' option, that may well have happened. Seems everyone else is able to run the error checker though. Don't know why I cant.

good news is the drive doesnt have physical errors, bad news is your other drive is failing, the one where it says caution, (e

you should try again, with the checkbox set to on for scan and attempt recovery of errors on the scan window.

Hey there, Jak_Sparra!

I'm sorry to hear about your issues with the WD Elements desktop external drive.

By the looks of the SMART results, the drive itself is perfectly healthy. I'd suggest you to try removing/uninstalling the storage device from Device Manager and then plug it back in afterwards. Once the HDD is detected by Windows, it will start installing it as a new device.
If that doesn't help, I'd also suggest you to make a copy of those 4.3 TB elsewhere. It's strongly recommended to keep at least two copies of your files on different locations to avoid any potential data loss.
