My current specification
gigabyte h61m d2 b3 motherboard
2+2gb ram
intel corei5 2400
500gb hdd samsung

Planning to buy
msi gtx 970
2+8 gb ram

do i need to apply thermal grease when i upgrade
after playing gta episodes from liberty city for 1.5 hours max temparature of the cpu package was 63 c and and current temparature was 50/51 c (immediately after closing that game)

Solution
If you are keeping the same cpu (which looks like you are) then you don't NEED to change the thermal paste. Although I recommend you do since it is probably 3 years or older. Thermal paste loses some effectiveness after a few years.

Also it seems like you will be mixing differen capacity ram. I would be careful with this because it can change requencies and timings of the ram, leading to a slight decrease in performance. If you can post the specs of the ram then we may be able to determine if this is true.

Kinda, both will run at 1333 mhz. Your new one will have to be underclocked to match frequencies (should be done automatically by the mobo). Also I don't think it will be able to fully run dual channel since it's different capacity.

Performance will not drop from your old setup since having more ram outweighs the this small problem. However mixing ram reduces the full potential of your new ram.

In some cases the 2 ram sticks may not be compaitible at all. I have never experienced this but others on the forum have claimed otherwise. Worst comes to worst you can run the 1 stick of 8gb ram and sell your old ones.
It would be best for you to get a 2x 4gb kit and sell the old ram. The extra 2 gb will not do much for you.
