Hi guys, here is my specs:

ASUS m5a97
AMD x4 925, 2.8ghz
Watercooler that came with it from ibuypower
GTX 550ti
Windows 7

I think thats the important information, if not let me know. My problem:

Since yesterday morning when my power switched on and off my PC has been overheating. Running speedfan it says my core was running at 45-55c and my GPU was running at 95c while idle. My computer shut down yesterday saying my CPU temp was near 90c and then again this afternoon saying the same.

So I am not sure which I should believe and which I should fix. I am also not sure if my watercooler hasnt just finally crapped out after 5 years. I am going to change the thermal paste on it right now but I have about $100 to replace parts with and I can buy a gtx 750 for $85 (big sale at fry's) or an FX-4350 for $85.

Any help would be great.

Update: changing the thermal paste didn't help. It also "sounds like" the water cooling is working but it doesnt sound the same as it always has.

It turns out I am an idiot and after my second time tearing it apart and plugging everything back in I figured out what was wrong. The fan that is hooked up to the water cooler died. It will be a simple fix tomorrow when I can get to the store.

But I am still thinking about upgrading either my CPU or GPU if anyone has any suggestions. I am just not sure which is the bigger upgrade. A GTX 750 or an FX-4350.
